1L Mission Update | Nicole Marburger | Video & Newsletter

We are thankful for you, 1L fam! We really appreciate all your prayer and financial support as we continue to #LiveOneLove wherever the Lord leads. This month that included: putting on a skate event specifically for kids at the Paia Youth and Cultural Center, sharing the light that casts out the darkness at a middle school “GLOW Night,” starting #OneLoveLegacy discipleship, doing a board give-away in NC, and testifying of His life-changing work through a faith story blog on oneloveskate.org. Here's our monthly mission Newsletter:

With the big move back to Maui, some were under the impression that the Marburgers were no longer “doing One Love.”  To bring some clarity, it is for the One Love of Jesus that we moved back to Maui!  God opened a full-time pastoral position for Joshua, but we are still “doing” and living One Love here.  It is this very ministry and organization that allows us to live back in Hawaii on the island of Maui.  So please keep us in your prayers!

↑ Know the Love.  ↓ Be the Love. Nerf darts flew around the stone waves as an army of students worked to capture the flag (a One Love Skate hat) from their friends. Students and staff from Paia Youth and Cultural Center were stoked as Sam Peralta and Joshua Marburger repped the 1L by helping lead a #OneLoveSkate event in Paia last Saturday.

Drone footage from our friend Nilson shows some of the fun as students enjoyed games of "s-k-8," "Simon Says, Skate!," & a "Nerf Blast War." A "One Love Anthem," from rapper Aaron Beasley, played over a speaker as the message of One Love transformed the Saturday morning atmosphere for about 30 skater kids.

One Love Skate exists to be a positive presence in the skate community, and we are working to see One Love Reps trained to #LiveOneLove by leading weekly life groups and monthly skateboard giveaways at all 5 skateparks here in Maui, Hawaii.

Whether you skateboard or not, we want to help you rep the 1L using whatever you have been created to enjoy. Leiana Kepa, of the band Leileiana, shares about how she lives the One Love through music as part of our leader training on OneLoveSkate.org.

Callings: My 1L Faith Story | Nicole Haunani Marburger

Callings: My 1L Faith Story | Nicole Haunani Marburger

At fourteen, I knew there was more to life than what my day-to-day looked like. I felt broken inside, and I desperately wanted things to feel “right.”

If you could be any vegetable, what would it be and why? That question, and the answer of a friend of mine, got me thinking about life in a whole new way. I know it sounds a bit wonky, but sometimes metaphors have a way of hitting me in ways that go far deeper than general conversation. My friend compared herself to a head of lettuce. Lettuce! She said that lettuce could continually have its top cut off and keep growing back. My mind was spinning. That’s me! I feel I’ve been cut off and cut down to my stump in the garden of life, but here I am! By God’s grace, I’m still here and still growing. Thank you, lettuce!

Growing up, I was your general go-with-the-flow kind of kid. I didn’t have any other choice, really.

Sundays were family beach days growing up.  I’ve got a ton of fond memories splashing, swimming, and soaking up the sun!

Sundays were family beach days growing up.  I’ve got a ton of fond memories splashing, swimming, and soaking up the sun!

The oldest and only girl with two younger brothers meant that at the young age of five, I was propelled into a world of responsibility when my parents separated. I grew up knowing I was loved, but brokenness still took its effect in my life. I lived moment by moment. I didn’t really have a sense of peace and childlike buoyancy like my peers around me. It wasn’t until God got a hold of my heart that my life had any sense of purpose. At fourteen, I knew there was more to life than what my day-to-day looked like. I felt broken inside, and I desperately wanted things to feel “right.” I had a good friend and neighbor at the time that kept inviting me to summer camp, and that particular summer I finally agreed.

This is a picture a friend snapped of me at Camp Keanae right outside the big meeting tent overlooking my cabin (to the left) the summer of 2001 when my life changed.

This is a picture a friend snapped of me at Camp Keanae right outside the big meeting tent overlooking my cabin (to the left) the summer of 2001 when my life changed.

Long story made short, God used Colossians 3:2 to still the unrest in my heart and introduce me to His perfect peace. It says, “Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.” Boom. There it was. My mind was the battlefield. God set me free by opening my mind to Him and things above, things beyond this earth. I remember praying something like this, “God, I know you’re in control of everything. So, why wouldn’t I give my life to you?!” That was that start of my life-changing belief in Jesus Christ.

Fast-forward a handful of years and I said, “Yes!” to God at a Missions Conference in college. It was a “Yes!” to whatever He had in store for my life. I didn’t know all the details, but I had a peace and clarity from the Lord that He was leading me in the direction of missions—working wholeheartedly for Him regardless of the specific vocation. Amidst all the options ahead and around me as a college junior, I just knew in my soul that He had it all under control.

…looks to outsiders like this crazy life-on-the-edge type of adventure. I was down with that. We’d live missionally together. He was called to ministry and I was called to serve alongside him.

Within that year, I had met, got engaged, and then married my awesome Joshua Michael. I was in the process of applying for a 2 year international mission service when God reminded me that my “Yes!” was to His plans and not my own. I was pursuing becoming a missionary, but God had marriage in mind (first, anyway). I was a bit like mental and emotional whiplash, but I was excited! My husband oozes the joy of Jesus and lives out his faith in a way that looks to outsiders like this crazy life-on-the-edge type of adventure. I was down with that. We’d live missionally together. He was called to ministry and I was called to serve alongside him.

Graduation, the “jump,” & marriage in 2008!  WooHoo!!!

Graduation, the “jump,” & marriage in 2008!  WooHoo!!!

About six years into our life in ministry together, we had gone from two jobs and no kids, to one job and two kids. We loved living with the mission of making Jesus known through the way we lived our lives; however, there was a holy discontent in our souls. Around that time, Joshua felt compelled to step away from his pastoral position and to put all his efforts and energy into a vision God had given him in college. We moved from Maui to NC to stabilize and better establish One Love Skate 501c3. It was an intense time of trusting the Lord when feeling like we were walking blind. About two months into the move, we were invited as One Love (1L) missionaries to speak to a youth group at a Disciple Now for Element Church in Forest City, NC.

So thankful my husband listens to Jesus and encouraged me to share my story at Element Church in March 2016.

So thankful my husband listens to Jesus and encouraged me to share my story at Element Church in March 2016.

I distinctly remember a moment during worship through music where I tangibly felt the peace of God wash over me. It was like He was confirming in my spirit that I was right where He wanted me to be. I had said, “Yes!” and I was living out that “Yes!” It was like a divine hug from the Lord reassuring me that He had it all planned out; I didn’t need to keep freaking out. It was that same peace and clarity I felt when I said “Yes!” all those years ago. I loved talking to people about Jesus. He reminded me of that in that moment. I had let years of ministry work cloud my memory of that. I loved it! I was called to ministry and I had already said “Yes!” I just need that reminder.

God constantly reminds me to “Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.” His ways and His peace are life. I’m called to share that.

I love how God works everything out for the good of those who are called according to His purpose! I was called to salvation at 14, called to missions at 20, and then reminded of my call to ministry at 29. Man, what a ride! Ephesians 2 talks about being dead in our sins, being made alive in Christ, and being His workmanship. That is my story. I am His workmanship, created in Christ to do the work He prepared for me in advance. Those works include being a missionary with 1L where we use the tools and opportunities God gives us to show people true love, God’s one love in Christ. Part of our mission is to walk with people on their journey to saying “Yes!” to God.

1L seeks to be a positive presence at skate parks to point people to Jesus, and we are thankful to partner with the County of Maui for family friendly skate events.

1L seeks to be a positive presence at skate parks to point people to Jesus, and we are thankful to partner with the County of Maui for family friendly skate events.

1L is a dynamic discipleship and evangelistic ministry dedicated to sharing the one love of Jesus outside the walls of church buildings by partnering with people, churches, and organizations. God constantly reminds me to “Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things.” His ways and His peace are life. I’m called to share that. In this word, we will have trouble—we will feel cut down and left stumpy, but Christ-followers have hope. He who is in us (Jesus!) is greater that he who is in the world. Like a head of lettuce, pieces of me have been done away with, but with Jesus at my core, I still have life—a life better than one I could have drummed up in my mind for myself. The love of Jesus created me and it sustains me; Jesus is my core. Just like lettuce, as long as I still have my core, I’ll keep growing.

Fear And Faith: Crazy Transitions Of Marriage, Multiplying, & Ministry by Joshua & Nicole Marburger

If you have ever stood on top of a huge ramp or paddled in to a huge wave and chose to “drop in,” you know that transitions can sometimes be fun and sometimes be painful...

Recently, a friend of ours, Joshua Knipple, asked us to write about "Fear And Faith" for his new book. This process was great for us as we continue to work on our #LiveOneLove book. We came up with this Fear & Faith by Joshua and Nicole Marburger.pdf which we are also posting on this blog. About:
Joshua Marburger is a Pastor in Hawaii and Founder of the international discipleship ministry “One Love Skate” 501c3. He and his wife, Nicole, have been enjoying the ride together since meeting at North Greenville University in 2007 where they were first resourced and equipped to be “shoulder to shoulder with soldiers for the Kingdom.” They now have three boys and enjoy serving, speaking, and writing to help many experience the One Love of Jesus (1L). They work hard to provide resources to help as many people as possible #LiveOneLove as a positive presence in their communities through Life Groups and Discipleship.

Joshua & Nicole’s prayer and passion in life is to help resource and equip
disciples (1L Reps) to lead life groups at every skatepark in the world.

Through big transitions, we are continuing to live out the Most High's call "Shoulder-to-shoulder with soldiers for God's Kingdom" to serve as 1L Missionaries everywhere we go, & we can't do it without your prayer support!

Joshua is enjoying serving full-time as Life Groups & Discipleship Pastor at Waipuna Chapel as Nicole is enjoying new roles with One Love, and more than ever we need you to keep helping us with your prayers (2 Corinthians 1:11).

Video - Marburger Fam Intro at Waipuna Chapel & Prayer in all 3 Weekend Services

Yesterday, Waipuna Chapel graciously welcomed our Marburger family! What a blessing to be prayed for in all three services last weekend! Joshua is the new "Associate Pastor of Life Groups & Discipleship," and we will also continue to serve full time as missionaries through "One Love Skate" 501(c)(3).

Let's join with Waipuna Chapel in prayer for housing Upcountry by the end of September.  We are praying we can purchase a house close to the church and big enough for our family of 5. We also pray our house will be able to host missionaries and people in our monthly support team who come to visit and join us in ministry.

Call to Move | Experience 1L Day Video (8/13/17)

As Joshua and Nicole (and all of us) transition, we rest knowing: "What is over our heads is under God's feet." As Isaiah 55 explains, God's ways truly are higher than our ways.

Last Sunday was "Experience 1L Day" at Hope Community Church, and Joshua shared that he recently accepted a position as Associate Pastor at Waipuna Chapel back in Maui, Hawaii.

After both services and baptisms Sunday, we took this picture in front of the "What's One Love? Sign. Thankful skaters from the community joined us for the service along with other special guests!

Thankful skaters from the community joined us for the service along with other special guests!

Please pray for grace for the Marburger move:
- Family transition to Maui
- Nicole's new missionary roles with One Love Skate (501c3):  Communicating, Connecting, & Creating
- Ministry of Waipuna Chapel
 - Great relationships with staff, lots of spiritual fruit through life groups / Waipuna's services, plus revival on Maui as Joshua serves as Associate Pastor of Life Groups and Discipleship
- Marburgers continue full-time work with One Love Skate, and Joshua's yearly month of unpaid leave (plus additional vacation time) from Waipuna to pursue 1L ministry opps
- 1L Reps to be Discipled, Resourced, & Equipped at all 5 skateparks in Maui this year as we partner with people, churches, and organizations

Last Sunday, during the services at Hope Community we saw people stand up and commit to share the 1L of Jesus this week.

We also celebrated a profession of faith, three baptisms, and people called to ministry.

[God] reveals that He is El Elyon, God Most High… the only true God. He is the only God who can save. He is the only God who created the entire world. He is the only God that can really satisfy a human’s longing for a relationship with God. He is certainly the only One who can save us from our sin.
— Dr. Pete Wilbanks, from Experience 1L Day

Caleb Wright - Repping One Love with Lahaina Baptist in Maui

One Love Lahaina

This is Caleb Wright from One Love Lahaina. We are very similar to our brothers in NC. Wednesday’s we have a free skate over at the amazing Lahaina Skate park. After some fun skating everyone heads across the street to the awesome One Love room we have at Lahaina Baptist Church.

Our Official One Love Lahaina mascot "Alfred"

Our Official One Love Lahaina mascot "Alfred"

Here we enjoy some time of fellowship and diving into God’s word. Our efforts are to reaching youth at the skate park, and around Lahaina.

We do many skate days, but also since we are blessed to live on this beautiful Island we take many surf trips together as well. Pastor Jay from Lahaina Baptist Church says “Our goal is to reach the lost kids in and around the Skate scene.” It really is as simple as that.

God has called us to make disciples and we saw that not many people were going into the skate parks, so that is where you will find us.

One Love in Lahaina is here to Share God’s Love, Teach the youth about who he is, and Develop relationships with them that last a lifetime.

Keep us in your prayers as we seek to live One Love.

Blessings,

Caleb Wright, One Love Lahaina

Thanks To Maui Skateboard Series for putting on another radical event for the skate boarders of Maui.  A few weeks ago the M.S.S. team arranged a portable ramp skate jam and best trick contests in tribute for the new skate park being built in Kula.

(Braden B. f/s board)

(Braden B. f/s board)

Everyone is excited for this new skate park which rumors say it should be done in a year or so.

It was a beautiful Maui scenic day and there was an amazing crew of families and upcoming Maui skaters having a blast.  The M.S.S. team did a great job with the arrangements of the ramps, providing snacks, pizza, and drinks, also setting the atmosphere and keeping the skaters hyped.

Not only where there the local skate groms and highly supportive parents on scene, the Keopulani locals arrived on scene as well with all of their skate boarding maneuvers.

What I loved about this even the most it was the right amount of competitiveness with the perfect amount of fun and enjoyment.  No one was over aggressive and it truly felt like a Maui Ohana of skaters.

There was 3 divisions of “best trick” contests.  The 8 and under, 8-15, and then the older kids.  They had three skaters at a time go for about 2 minutes for the best trick and then ultimately until each division had the top 3 compete for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd prize.

There was over 100+ people who came out.  And tons of prizes from Aloha skateboards, Maui groms, Hi-tech, Maui County, and One Love Skate.  Also thanks to all the countless sponsors I forgot.

(the Maui Skate Series team)

(the Maui Skate Series team)

It was amazing to see the upcoming skaters of Maui is going strong and would love to see us (One Love Skate) being able to encourage and cultivate the skate scene on Maui and be a major influence in the lives of the skate culture here on the island.  It seems that more families are involved with the skate scene here and it is so encouraging to see such support.

I feel as we continue to share life with each other through skateboarding, hopefully curiosity for eternity and the love of God can be shared through conversations, acts of kindness, and just being passionate about the gifts and talents given to us.

I believe in One Love Skate ministry a lot because its not a program or a kind of way to make people do something, it is simply people wanting to proclaim the good news of God that He is the true source of love.

Growing up on Maui I’ve seen many people come and go but the one thing that remains the same is the love of God and His reflection in the people here on the island.

(xander: nose grind)

I was actually able to join the best trick contest, which I haven’t really done a contest for at least 7 years.  It made me realize how much fun skating with your friends and challenging yourself is.  So keep challenging yourself and have fun!

Aloha ke Akua!
